On our final full day of Charleston it was my birthday!! I went over to my parents hotel to have breakfast. We decided to leave downtown and explore other areas of Charleston. One of the many things I wanted to do when visiting was to go to a plantation. We could probably spend a whole week just visiting plantations, but there was one in particular that I really wanted to go to, The Boone Hall Plantation.

The Boone Hall Plantation has hosted many films, but one in particular I cared most about. Can you guess? One of my favorites….Boone hall plantation

It’s The Notebook!! Famous for is long driveway with planted oak trees, The Boone Plantation was part of The Notebook. If only Ryan Gosling came with the visit…. Anyway, we toured around the 1st floor of the house and learned how it has gone through different generations, families, wars, and renovations. The Boone family only built a small farm house but as time went on other owners of the house added on.

After the tour we walked around a little, looking through slave cabins and at the harvest. We watched a presentation of a woman dressed as Gullah slave (her grandmother worked on the plantation) telling tales and singing songs. Our visit was nice and I wish we could of have stayed longer, but we had a 1pm boat ride to get to. On our way out of the plantation we spotted horses. I of course had to jump out of the car to get a closer look as horses are my favorite animal. And since it was my birthday, and I love horses, it means that I could take a horse as a present right? Unfortunately my parents said no because they obviously do not want to see me happy. So I left horseless and sad.

Our 1pm boat ride was to Fort Sumter… again, history geeks. Fort Sumter, for those of you who may not know, is a little sea fort that was taken hostage by the Confederates during the Civil War while they fought the Union. We had a tour of the fort, learned about it’s historical two battles that took place. The fort has obviously been renovated since the war but many parts are still left standing. There are also cannons left there from the war as well,  which was pretty cool to see. After our trip to Fort Sumter we headed back to our hotels to rest for a little bit before heading out to my birthday dinner at Husk.

Husk Restaurant

Before Husk I had my parents over to my hotel, Zero George, for complimentary cheese and champagne. I finally had my appetite back, just in time for a heaven-sent of a meal.  Husk Restaurant was highly recommended to me from almost everyone and I can see why. Everything was delicious and I couldn’t get enough of it. It was by far the best meal I had in Charleston. I had the chicken with squash, peppers, and other vegetables. It was truly divine!

I wore this wrapped dress to my birthday dinner at Husk. I love how comfortable it is, yet elevated. The pattern is beautiful and the baby blue with navy hues makes this dress a perfect traditional piece into fall.

After dinner we went and got ice cream as this local shop. I needed a cool treat during this hot, humid trip. After ice cream we went back to our separate hotels where I cuddled up in my comfy bed and celebrated me becoming an old hen.

I flew out early the next day. I was sad to leave Charleston but was ready to get back to the city. My first trip to the southern city was perfect and I can’t wait to go back and explore more. Next time I want to make it more of a casual, lets do what the locals do, type of trip. If you have never been to Charleston I highly recommend doing so– but do it in the fall or spring when it is not humid and you look like you just ran a marathon.
