tailgate

Throwing a curveball at you today with some sports analogy and unequivocal lame puns……. #sports.  I know the quarterback needs to throw the ball into the basket before the goalie blocks it…… only kidding, I have watched golf before.

Before you throw a flag at me for offensive behavior, I do know a thing or two about sports. Growing up my parents put my sister and me into every sport imaginable so we could decide whether or not we liked it. My soccer career sadly lasted only a season in Kindergarten, which was obvious when the team ran across the field after the ball and I stayed on the other side only to claim “why? they are going to run back here”. In the end I chose to stick with dance and cheerleading (and a partial volleyball career in high school). Although I didn’t play sports in high school I did attend a lot of games to cheer on my friends. Whether it was a ruby game to a polo match, from lacrosse games to gymnastic competitions, if my friends were playing I will go and watch!

As a kid, Saturdays were filled with Ohio State University football games as we either attended or watched on TV. As I grew up my Saturdays were taken over by dance competition practice. In college I was told my school had a football team… I also didn’t realize that Saturday morning’s existed(?). It really was not until after college that I got back into tailgating and OSU games. Ok, only tailgating. I loved going over to campus to run around with my friends all day. I looked forward to Saturdays and all of the fun we had together.  Then I moved to New York and watching football games no longer became a priority. I would get together with friends who lived in the city every once in a while to watch a game or two– especially if there is a championship game of some sorts, but that is it. My life has never been live, breath, ruin my Saturday night because we lost a game. And it never will be

My feelings for sports has always been neutral. I like sports, I will watch sports if I have to, but I am not going to deck myself out in head to toe gear. I have never owned a jersey and am not rushing home to watch Monday Night Football. I won’t rattle off stats or names of players on xyz team, but ask me to go to a Yankee’s game or the US Open and I will gladly accept. Ask me to buy season tickets or watch ESPN and you can go find yourself a new friend.

Last weekend my roommate attended her boyfriend’s alma mater football game with a few of his friends. Seeing as she is originally from Australia, having any sort of college memorabilia is out of the question. She ended up wearing a white off the shoulder top, white jeans, and orange earrings. I thought what she wore seemed appropriate as she is also not one to wear head to toe logos. Then it dawned on me–in a few weeks I am heading over to Jersey to attend the OSU vs. Rutgers. My entire family will be there to cheer on the Buckeyes. It will be a fun weekend away but I have nothing OSU related to wear. I put together a little tailgating style guide so if you are like me and are not ready to commit to painting your face school colors, this will be the next best thing.
