From Coachella to bridal parties, flower crowns have graced the heads of women all over our instagram feeds. No longer are they for the flower child of the 60’s, flower crowns have made it’s way back into our hearts and is now mainstream chic to wear. It’s a must have for parties that will add a fun touch to any event. Women will eat up the chance to wear a flower crown. I, for one, am here for the new flower crown generation

. Every year my good friend Christy, owner of Crowns by Christy, host an intimate event at her Manhattan apartment. We sip rosé, catch up with friends, eat pizza off of fine china, and make flower crowns. Every time I have been at an event I noticed a few girls asking for directions in making their crowns. I would like to toot my own horn if you do not mind… I am pretty good at making flower crowns. During college and a little after college my aunt and cousin owned a flower and stationary shop that I would work at during break. Mastering the art of floral creations was a very handy skill to learn. Anyway, knowing that some girls are foreign to this creation I thought I’d give a little tutorial.

Making flower crowns is a lot easier than you think. Once you tie the first flower on you will see how easy it truly is. The hardest part, I think, is figuring out what you want your crown to look like, what flowers to use. I tend to stick with two flowers and go every other one with them. Some like to mix and match. Some will add babies breath for a whimsical effect.  In the end there is no right or wrong way in your choice of flowers.

What you will need in order to create a flower crown is wire, scissors, floral wire, florist tape (if you prefer), and of course flowers. Take the wire and morph it into a circle that will fit around your heard. Leave just enough so you can twist the ends together. Test it on your head before you begin putting the flowers on to make sure it fits. You do not want it to be too tight but not too big. Cut the steams of the flowers about 2 inches or smaller. I like to cut the flowers as I go along so I can gage how short or long I want the steams to be.

Cut the first flower and place the steam is parallel to the wire– so at an angle. Take the floral wire and wrap it around the steam and the base wire. I usually like to do two flowers at a time to not waste wire, but go with your preference. After you  twist the wire around the flower(s) you can either leave it as is or use the florist tape (green tape) to mask it. Some may like to use only the tape to secure the steams onto the crown— but again that is preference. After you have secured the flower move onto the next one. Keep going  all the way around the crown until you have reached the end.

Sometimes I like to leave a little wire at the end during parties so I am not wasting flowers. You really only see the front in pictures so it does not matter. Creating flower crowns is a fun activity to do with your friends, at kids birthday parties, bridal showers, events, etc. It’s always a hit among any party truly! A little pro tip: pair your flower crown with a few glasses of rosé, makes for an even better evening!

Enjoy making your crowns!!
