When you think of summer patterns a few come to mind– florals, seersucker, and gingham. Dubbed the checker pattern, gingham means striped. Some may call it plaid, although the significant difference is larger stripes that the yarn is woven over each other to create different sizes. Gingham is woven to create symmetrical squares and with only one color and white yarn. The yarn is also cotton making it lighter weight and a summertime classic.

Gingham will forever be a traditional summer pattern. You can find it in almost every type of garment and accessory for each sunshine season. Currently my closet of gingham attire consist of an old Theory dress (that I still love and wear) and J.Crew shorts that I probably need to get rid of. Although my collection is sadly small, I find gingham to be a cute print to wear. It’s typically flattering on everyone and can be styled to your liking. Make it preppy or edgy, gingham is versatile. Pair the print with a leather jacket for a cool, NYC look or espadrilles for a preppier look. Some may dare to mix patterns together like gingham with florals. Or you can wear it as a touch of detail as an accessory to a plain dress. There are so any ways to wear gingham and for any occasion.

Personally I think I need to add a few more pieces to my closet. A new gingham dress for the summer would suffice, but I am also loving this pink gingham purse for a touch of pattern. This top can go well into the fall when the temperature is still slightly warm. However you wear gingham, know that it’s an item you will be able to wear time and time again for years to come as it’s a trend that will never go out of style.
