Today is the start of New York Fashion Week, which means I will be spending the following week dressed up, running around the city. It also means I will be wearing make-up all day, everyday. It’s no secret that I have struggled with acne since I turned 21 (happy birthday! you can legally drink now but oooh wait here comes teenage acne that you never had). By the end of my 20’s my skin started to clear up, due to me cutting out gluten. Although my struggles with acne are now few and far in-between (I break out sometimes during my cycle), I still make a conscious decision on what products I put on my face. Since I am spending so much time in make-up taking photos, going to events and meetings, hanging out with friends, I want to make sure the products I use are clean and healthy. Especially during the winter time when the weather can be harsh on our skin.
A skincare and beauty company I have been loving and using for the past few years is Beautycounter. When one of my very good friends from home, Alessandra Rogers, became a representative of the brand I took noticed in the company and the products they were selling. Beautycounter strips away chemicals that have been banned in all other areas of the world but the United States. Chemicals that are harmful to your skin and health.. i.e: lead. Alessandra is one of the BC ladies leading the fight in Washington to get these chemicals banned in the US. Go Ali!!
Although I am ashamed to say not all of the products I use are chemically free, I am slowly starting to swipe them out for Beautycounter. I have been using this nourishing night cream for over a year now and love how it does not leave my skin feeling oily and still moisturizes it. I also have been using the exfoliator as it is the only one that I have tried that does not irritate my skin. I believe less is more when it comes to my skin (learned the hard way with having perioral dermatitis), so I try not to put on too much oils and serums. The only time I use a serum is at night. Alessandra sent me the overnight resurfacing peel to try and I am in love with it. My skin feels fresh in the morning and not oily or dried out. Another item she sent me is the balancing + charcoal facial mask. I personally asked for it to try. Charcoal is a popular trend in skincare these days and I wanted to see how it can help with my skin. I was nervous to try it, being a mask that dries on your skin and it being winter. Right now I am only using it once a week, if not every other week to keep my skin from drying out. And I put it on for a minimal amount of time. I do like the mask and feel my skin is fresh after using it.

Although I have been swiping out my skincare for cleaner products, one thing that I am just now doing is changing up my makeup. I have noticed the more days in a row I wear makeup the more I breakout. I changed my foundation to this lightweight hydrating one from Beautycounter (I use porcelain… I mean look at my casper skin, of course I do). And I bought this blush to use, but still am guilty of using another makeup brand for my blush. One item that I am really guilty of using that is filled with chemicals is lipstick. I can’t seem to shake off my beloved Chanel lipsticks (probably never will). Alessandra sent me a Beautycounter lipstick to try and I do love the look and how it stays on my lips for a long time. I would love to try other shades. There is a Beautycounter store that just opened up here in NYC in Soho. I have yet to pop into the new store but will do so soon to test out other skincare and makeup products.
Beautycounter just rolled out a Counter Men line and have an already established baby and kids line. As someone who enjoys living a healthy lifestyle. I am conscious about what I put into my body, eating nourishing foods, and making sure I get enough exercise. It is just as important to know what you are putting onto our bodies than it is what we are putting into.
