For over a year I have been trying to educate myself of the importance of keeping our earth clean. It is not that I didn’t care before, I mean as a child I was deeply affected by Ferngully and went around my neighborhood to raise money for the rainforest. I think in the past I was not truly paying attention to what exactly is happening to our environment. Now that I know, I hate to tell you guys but it is not looking good. I believe we have about 25 years max to fix this problem. My interest or my awareness sparked when I went to a luncheon last year about sustainability. Since then I have been trying to inform myself about wearing sustainable clothes (still have a hard time since not every brand is), learning about climate change, landfills, pollution, and ocean clean up.
adidas recently teamed up with Parley to bring awareness to World Ocean Day on June 8th. As we all know the ocean plays a pretty important role in keeping our earth healthy and us living. Let me give you a little science lesson: As we all know the earth is made up of 71% water. You are probably thinking, well that is a lot what’s the problem? The problem is that the ocean is being destroyed; coral reefs will be gone by 2025, fish and other sea creatures are becoming distinct because of the growing human population and consumption (lack of food for us humans and for other animals/mammals), global warming is drying up parts of oceans and lakes, and the scariest one of all is our oxygen is being depleted. What does oxygen have to do with the ocean? Our ecosystem is intertwined obviously. Our ocean is responsible for about 70% of our earths oxygen. This oxygen is created by marine photosynthesis or oxygenic photosynthesis; energy from the sunlight and plants/algae transform H2O to CO2 which ultimately creates oxygen. Now if the ocean is being polluted and there is no growth or life for plants and if the water is being dried up, where will the oxygen come from? Us humans cannot live without oxygen.
There is current testing of a massive cleanup where a machine will be sent into the ocean to collect plastic. This is just part of the effort that has taken place to help the ocean and the environment. So what can we do to help clean up the ocean? Easy! Recycle your plastic bottles. Plastic bottles are usually the number one culprit for pollution in the ocean. Even though I personally do not live that close to the ocean, only rivers, it is still important to recycle. It would be great if we all stopped using plastic in general but until then make sure you properly recycle. Make a conscious effort to do it. If you are walking down the street and you see trash on the ground, throw it away (and then wash your hands). Another great way to help the environment is to shop sustainable items. Parley and adidas have a collaborative line with items that are all sustainable, recycled materials.
Whether you donate money to organizations like Parley to clean up the oceans or you simply throw your water bottle in the recycling bin, any small step will help get us closer to a cleaner, healthier planet. We do not want to see the ocean we love so much go away. It’s time we do our part in saving this beautiful earth of ours.
