It’s no surprise that I love to dance. From my many Insta Stories to my TikTok (@blushandblooms), I have been sharing my love of dance throughout social media. Another part of my life that I haven’t shared as much is music. I come from a musical family; my mother plays the clarinet, my sister plays the drums, my grandfather was in the Ohio State Marching Band (TBDBITL), and other members of my family play the trombone, violin, guitar, flute, and the piano. My dad doesn’t play any instruments but he likes to draw and paint– a few of his paintings and drawings are hung up around my parent’s house. As for me, I am not as well-versed as other members of my family when it comes to playing instruments, but I can play the piano….well, beginners and intermediate.
My grandmother to this day (97yrs old), teaches piano lessons. I took lessons from her as a kid up until middle school. I was involved in too many activities such as dance, cheerleading, and sports. So I decided to end my piano lessons. I regret doing it, I wish I could play a piece from Chopin or Taylor Swift. I did take an elective course in college to freshen up my skills. Now I only play during the holidays when my grandmother is over as a fun activity for us to do together. Not to brag or anything, but I am pretty good at playing Christmas songs on the piano. I do still need the sheet music in front of me to play, however.
Now that we have all the time in the world for any and all activities, as well as the pursuit of a new skill, I find myself at the piano more and more. I am still only playing music that I am familiar with, maybe out of nostalgia or the peace of mind to not have to think. I do want to advance myself a little in more classical pieces. I would love to learn how to play Debussy’s “Clair de Lune”, which is my favorite classical song. Maybe that is too ambitious but I’ve never been one to not at least try something that is challenging.
Besides trying to master my piano skills, I think there is something comforting about doing an activity I used to love as a kid. It brings back a lot of great memories with my grandmother. And right now I want to do, play, and listen to anything that makes me feel good.
