This past weekend I was riding bikes around the neighborhood with my dad. As we approached the park we saw that the tennis nets were back up and ready for the summer. Do to COVID-19 they were taken down to ensure social distancing. After seeing the nets back up and people playing, I asked my dad if he wanted to get a match in or two before I head back to New York in a few weeks. My dad is pretty good at tennis, played for Wabash in college. I took lessons as a kid but quit because it was too hot… melodramatic even then. Although I quit taking lessons, I continued to enjoy the sport by playing with my dad at the park and at the club or hitting the ball against my parent’s garage (to their patient dislike). And of course, watching the US Open and Wimbledon. A few years ago I took lessons at Midtown Tennis Club with Sam. It was a lot of fun playing again, but I have to admit I am not the best. I hit a lot of moonballs and some even over the roof. Oops! But I improved as the weeks went on. Although I do like to think I am the next Serena Williams.
If you live in New York then you know how hard it can be to grab a court at the Hudson River Park on the Westside Highway. There are always people waiting in line to play and I do not have the patience for that. So playing is few and far in-between. Being in Columbus it is much easier for me to dust off my racquet and hit a few balls with my dad. I left all of my tennis apparel at my apartment back in NYC. So it looks like I may have to go on a shopping spree for new activewear to dominate my dad on the court…. or get hit by the ball. Either way, I’ll still look chic.
