If you are like me then you have been binge-watching the new Netflix show Get Organized with The Home Edit all week. The Home Edit is a company founded by OCD enthusiast and organizational guru’s Joanna and Cleo. The two women, along with a team, will go into your home and organized anywhere from your closet to your garage. Their clients range from everyday people like us to celebrities such as Reese Witherspoon and Khloe Kardashian. The Home Edit is a little like Marie Kondo but instead of focusing on getting rid of things, it’s how you can optimize the space you already have. As someone who has a lot of stuff and lives in a small studio apartment, this show is a Godsend.
One of the silver linings of living through a pandemic is that you have ample time to revamp and reorganize your home. Finally getting to the projects you have put off. I have done a decently good job of keeping my belongings organized. I have baskets filled with clothes, blankets, and seasonal decor stuffed under my bed. I use old hat boxes for purses, headbands, and left-over gifted skincare and makeup items. Although I have a somewhat decent storage and organizational system going, there is always room for improvement. Right now I need to work on my closet and my workout station. Since the pandemic, I have bought more at-home workout equipment which is now just clumped together in the corner. I want to buy a bin or a basket to neatly keep the items together, making the area look nicer than just clutter on the floor.
My closet is going to take a few days of work. I have been blessed with having two closets in my apartment. One I use for clothing that is separated by season, and the other is for my coats. I probably should do a major purge of handbags and clothing items. In fact, that should be my first step, Marie Kondo my closet; what items bring me joy and what items I should donate and sell. Then I need to organize it! My closet is truly a mess. When I slide open the doors and try to reach for something, at least a purse or two falls down. I need a more seamless way to store them where I can see what I am reaching for. I am thinking about getting this small handbag organizer. For my shoes, I always keep the boxes in which they come in. I have each box piled on top of one another. For the most part, I do like this system; it keeps things organized and prevents scuffing. However, I would like to organize them in a way where I actually see the shoes. I have to admit that not every shoe is in the correct box or I have doubled in one box. My closet has sliding doors so a shoe organizer that hangs will not work for the space I have. I am thinking of either clear containers or this drop-front shoe box. I love that it’s clear in the front to see and I can easily pull it open without having to move other shoe boxes.
After watching The Home Edit, I am now excited to tackle my home storage and organizing projects that I have been putting off. Here are a few items I am currently shopping to help keep my tiny studio apartment looking nicely put together.
