Last year when the pandemic hit I, like many others, went home to their parents house for a few months. While I was back home in Columbus I helped my parents out in their garden as it was the beginning of spring. A time to give life and color to the yard surrounding our house.

Over the years I have had a grown interest in gardening, but here is where I really developed a green thumb. I would accompany my mom on trips to the garden center to pick out flowers and seeds to plant. I would knee right next to my dad digging through the dirt, pulling out weeds, and planting flowers. Sadden when the job was done. I had a thirst for wanting to plant more. I even asked my dad if we could start a vegetable garden which he quickly shot down– apparently they did it years ago and my dad was not a fan.

Now that I am back to being a city girl my chance of gardening this season is slim to none. Sure there are areas around the city where I could purchase a square and plant whatever I want. But that is a commitment no New Yorker really takes unless you have found your forever apartment. I tried to satisfy my green thumb by buying plants, but they apparently thought death was a better choice than to live with me. So what’s left is buying flowers from the local bodega once a week. I don’t mind, however. I enjoy freshening up my apartment with a new bouquet of flowers each week. Still I dream about the day when I finally have my own garden to tend. Here are a few gardening tools I would purchase to help my garden grow. Also gift ideas for Mother’s Day.
