As you all have been anticipating, it’s time for part 2 of what books I have read this past fall season. Continuing the theme of relationships, these next 3 books are all about love and friendship. Each showcasing that it’s better to be brave and take a risk for love than never trying at all. That sometimes we need to swallow our pride to be there for the one we love. That there are second chances at love and it can happen when you least expect it.

Portrait of a Scotsman

For the third installment of the A League of Extraordinary Women series, Portrait of a Scotsman follows banking heiress Hattie Greenfield in the late 1800s. The fashionable artistic one of the group, Hattie finds herself in a little bit of a scandal with financier Lucian Blackstone. A man who has a mysterious, dangerous past. Lucian finds himself in a favorable opportunity that will catapult his business and social standing amongst the people of Britain. However, a trip to Scotland changes everything for both Hattie and Lucian.

*Read the first two books before reading this one: Bringing Down The Duke and A Rouge of One’s Own

Review

I have been enjoying the A League of Extraordinary Women series, and Portraits of a Scotsman did not disappoint. I loved getting know Hattie better. How she is a heiress yet still goes to Oxford and wants to become an artist. Which is not the norm back then. Her steamy, complicated romance with Lucian is one that will make you unable to put the book down. This series is part historical fiction, part love story, part friendship. I highly recommend them as they are very enjoyable to read.

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo

Evelyn Hugo is a Hollywood icon. Her beauty and talent graced the big screen for decades, making her an actress that people will know about for years to come. Well, her talent and the fact that she had seven husbands will be the talk of the town. Evelyn’s personal life was just as fascinating as her on-screen characters. No one, however, has been able to get Evelyn to sit down for an interview in years until she personally reaches out to up and coming journalist Monique Grant. But instead of a magazine interview, Evelyn wants Monique to write her biography. As Evelyn tells tales of her past to Monique, all of her secrets are revealed. Evelyn is finally ready to tell the truth about her seven marriages and why she chose Monique to write her story.

Review

This was one of the best books I read last year! The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo has everything you want in a book; glamour, heartbreak, love, friendship, secrets, and shocking twists. Taylor Jenkins Reid has become one of my favorite authors. She really knows how to tell a story. I couldn’t wait to read what would happened next. Each story of Evelyn’s past was juicy. If this was a real biography I would pick it up in a heartbeat. If you are looking for an all around great book to read, I highly suggest this one.

Review

The Twelve Dates of Christmas was the perfect book to read over the holidays. A cute Christmas story about love. It gave me all the holiday romantic feels that I wanted. It felt very Hallmark… but maybe PG13 Hallmark. It’s pretty predictable how the story will end, but I still enjoyed following along Kate’s dating adventures.  Keep this book in mind for next holiday season.
