As customary, fashion trends come and go and then come back again. We saw the short lived revival of chokers a few years ago. The comeback of fanny packs and scrunchies (please stay!). The reawakening of low-rise jeans…. which I will personally protest at all cost. The beloved trends of our adolescence are back.
One resurface trend that seems to be prolonging its stay are bucket hats. An item so equivalently linked to my high school years; one that we clearly adopted from the 1960s. At first I teetered on whether or not to plunge back into this particular style for fear it may no longer be associated with my generation. Like all things from our childhood, it has kept its youth as we outgrew it. Then coastal grandmother aesthetics came along, creating a window of us elders to enjoy the trends of yore. Although I may not dive into the norm, I do have my eye on straw bucket hats.
Since spring has sprung I have seen more and more straw bucket hats grace my social media feeds. A beach style I long forgotten. Although bucket hats were popular when I was a teen, straw bucket hats were not. I credit this trend to our grandmothers and mothers who donned them back in the 60s. It’s classic, chic, and makes me think of a Slim Aarons photograph. In a few weeks I am heading to the Memorial Tournament with my dad and want a hat to shield my eyes from the sun. Of course I can always wear a baseball cap, but truthfully my forehead is short and I can’t wear my sunglasses with a ball cap. So another form of headwear is needed. A wide brim hat is too much, and my raffia visor will be plan b. I think straw bucket hats are cute and the perfect accessory to wear this summer season. Here are 10 straw bucket hats I have my eye on.
