It’s not very often one gets to relive their childhood. We grow up, immerse ourselves into adulthood, and put away our toys for the very last time. It’s a tale as old as time. The inevitable departure of ones childhood. We look back fondly on our past, but never to relive it again. That is until someone makes a movie out of it.

Like most little girls I grew up playing with Barbie dolls. My sister and I would spend hours dressing them up, combing their hair, and creating imaginary scenarios. I vividly remember Christmas morning when we got a Barbie dream house from Santa. How excited I was! I immediately grabbed my Barbies and played while my parents prepared Christmas brunch. I loved that house and I loved playing make-believe. But as life went on, I eventually grew out of playing with dolls. Onto much more mature, cooler interests of my adolescence.

Then Greta Gerwig comes along to create what seems to be a brilliant movie about our beloved doll. Our inner childhood playfulness unlocked. I am giddy over all of the nostalgia. It transports me back to my parents basement and that big beautiful dream house. But instead of playing with dolls, I am playing with Barbie pink.

Barbiecore has become a big trend this year thanks in large to the movie and to Valentino from their Pink PP F/W ’22/ ’23 collection from Paris Fashion Week. Everyone is wearing pink; from celebrities to streetwear fashionistas. And as someone who loves the color and wears it often, I am happy to see others embracing this playful, feminine hue. Of course Barbie has always had a major impact on culture and fashion, so this isn’t anything groundbreaking. It’s just nice to see everyone getting into the Barbiecore spirit. I can’t get enough of the Barbie PR circuit and Margot Robbie’s imitated outfits of Barbie’s of the past. It sparks joy and nostalgia. In a time when everything feels too heavy, it’s nice to see people’s inner child come out.

As Barbiecore continues to dominate trends this summer, I am all for donning pink attire. I am not embarrassed to say that I will be cosplaying Barbie by wearing pink to the theater when the movie comes out. Perhaps wear a hot pink slip dress or a cute floral peplum top. Maybe I will add a pop of color with pink heeled slide sandals. Whatever our outfits may be come July 21st, I hope we continue to keep our childlike playfulness of what Barbiecore represents.
