books

We have finally arrived at the last segment of what books I read this past winter. I was a busy-reading-bee; devouring book after book. I set a new goal for myself this year; to read 35 instead of my usual 30. I think I am in pretty good shape thus far. These last 3 books I am sharing are fun beach reads. They are feel-good romcom books that I adored so much. Each book had me kicking my feet giggling like a middle school girl. Here is part 3 of what books I read this past winter.

*Read part 1 and part 2

Say You’ll Be Mine

When Meghna, a theater teacher and inspiring playwright, finds out her writing partner and best friend Seth is engaged she feels heartbroken. Seth is the one that got away. And to make it worse, he asked her to be his best man. Determined to move on Meghna agrees to let her parents introduce her to a potential match. Karthik is grumpy engineer who doesn’t believe in marriage– especially after witnessing the dynamics between his parents. Still he allows his mom to set up potential matches just to make her happy. When Karthik meets Meghna they enter into a fake engagement for personal gain. For Meghna it’s to lessen the heartache of attending Seth’s wedding. For Karthik it’s to get his mother off his back about marriage. When along the way the traits they thought they hated of one another, may turn into something more. Say You’ll Be Mine is about opening yourself up to love– to the possibility.

Oh I really enjoyed this one! Even though it was obvious Karthik and Meghna would end up together, I enjoy a slow burn. This is an opposites attract type of love. My favorite part about their relationship was how supportive they became of each other; from their careers to personal growth. To me that is one of the most important parts of a relationship– support (among other things of course). I loved the twist at the end of Seth’s marriage crumbling. I didn’t see that coming, but it proved to Meghna that he wasn’t the guy that she thought he was. Even with Karthik mood swings he was always there for her, encouraging and supporting her.

Expiration Dates

Daphne has always been different. Every time she meets a new guy, the universe sends her a letter with his name and expiration date on it. Until one day, before a blind date with Jake, Daphne receives a letter with no expiration date on it. As Jake and Daphne’s story unfolds, she must choose between what she thinks is destiny or her own free will. All while trying to find a way to tell Jake the truth without breaking either of their hearts. Expiration Dates is about choosing the life you want to live. To not be afraid of the future and all the what-ifs. To take risks and live life.

This was another one that I couldn’t stop reading. The were so many twist and turns that I didn’t see coming. I really had no idea if Daphne would choose Hugo or Jake or someone else. I think Daphne ultimately made the right choice. I think Jake was comfortable with being the caretaker, but maybe ultimately they weren’t right for each other. I the storyline of playing with destiny  vs. free will. I think in a way I would want to have a paper with guys names and an expiration date. It takes out all the uncertainty and heartbreak. However, part of the magic in dating is that you don’t know the future so you cherish it as is. I believe that we are a mixture of destiny and free-will. I don’t know how or why, but I like to think there is an ultimate plan for us but we also have the freedom to make choices.

Ready or Not

Eva always knows what to expect from life. She lives in Brooklyn near her best friend Willa, works adjacent to her dream job, and loves her cute one-bedroom apartment. Eva is comfortable and steady…. that is until she finds herself unexpectedly pregnant from a one-night stand. As Eva goes through the 9-months of this unplanned pregnancy she struggles to figure out what to do. Her friendship with Willa is tense. The baby’s father is sorta supportive but also complicated. The only person who has truly been there for her is Willa’s older brother Shep. Now Eva not only has to prepare for this new baby, but she must also figure out her life. Ready or Not is about learning to adapt to changes and figuring out what is best for your life. While also navigating friendships and family along the way.

Another cute read! I love the slow burn between Shep and Eva. How respectful, loving, and supportive Shep is the entire time- he seems like a dream guy. It’s obviously they will end up together, but I enjoyed the unfolding. I also liked going through the stages of pregnancy with Eva. She wasn’t mentally ready or prepared for this new change, but she did her best to adapt. She is lucky she had a very supportive group of friends and family to help her through it all– even when she didn’t think so. I also liked how the books talks about the dynamic between the two women– Eva and Willa- both being in different stages in life. Having a baby really does change friendships. I felt for Willa and never once blamed her for distancing herself. It would hurt to much, but she should have told Eva sooner. However I understand how she was trying to deal with it internally first. The book is a great reminder that life is messy and will always throws curveballs at you, but the people around you who truly love you will always be there.
